The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck: A Counterintuitive Approach to Living a Good Life by Mark Manson

I’ve always been one up for a good inspirational read, and this version of reversed thinking is a breath of fresh air. It got me reading and re-reading lines just to see how I felt about what was just said.

I've stressed myself over trying to figure it all out, to knowing and owning myself inside and out. But maybe it's ok to not have all the pieces together. Maybe it's better. Because we are continually changing. It’s up to us to be open to that change, to evaluate and re-evaluate our values, to let go of expectations and entitlement, the pressure you and society place on yourself, to break it (it being, what is worth giving a f*ck) down to continually discover what really matters to us.

This is a self-help book that inspires in ways that nothing like a (hypothetical) slap in the face can - honesty, truth, humor and all. Thankful for this read (and yes, it's a definite fave).

1. The most worthy of struggles - picking and choosing where you direct your limited time and attention, where you will reserve your f*cks.

"...how to pick and choose what matters to you and what does not matter to you based on finely honed personal values. This is incredibly difficult. It takes a lifetime of practice and discipline to achieve. And you will regularly fail. But it is perhaps the most worthy struggle one can undertake in one's life. It is perhaps the only struggle in one's life."

2. There will be good times, there will be bad. There will be extraordinary, there will be mediocre. Find joy in choosing how you want to view those times and grow in the process.

"...it’s a never-ending upward spiral. And if you think at any point you’re allowed to stop climbing, I’m afraid you’re missing the point. Because the joy is in the climb itself."

"...you always get to choose how you see things, how you react to things, how you value things. You always get to choose the metric by which to measure your experiences."

3. Constant change is inevitable within and around you. Use that opportunity for change to your advantage.

"I say don’t find yourself. I say never know who you are. Because that’s what keeps you striving and discovering. And it forces you to remain humble in your judgments and accepting of the differences in others."
